The high peat bog in Wołosate

Following the blue trail from Ustrzyki Górne towards Wołosate, we will get across a high peat bog. Peat bog is a mixture of marsh and marsh plants formed on specific, hardly permeable soil. They are mainly composed of sphagnum mosses, which are arranged in a characteristic arrangement of tufts divided by depressions so-called the valleys. Dead plants slowly carbonize in an oxygen-poor water environment. High peat bogs are very acidic, poor in nitrogen and calcium compounds and are usually fed by rainwater.

The peat bog in Wołosate is situated at an altitude of about 680 m, on the Wołosatka gravel and clay terrace, formed during the Pleistocene and Holocene (it began to form about 10,000 years ago). Since 1959, part of the peat bog (2.04 ha) has been protected as a nature reserve, while in 1991 the whole (4 ha) became part of the Bieszczady National Park. The peat bog area is fenced and the information board was set by the road.
