Starina (water reservoir)

Starina water reservoir is the largest source of drinking water in Central Europe. The water reservoir has a capacity of 60 million m³ of water and extends over an area of 311 ha, the dam wall is 50 m high, 345 m long, 7 m wide. It was built in years 1981 to 1988 to supply eastern Slovakia (especially Prešov and Košice) with drinking water. Its construction was preceded by relocation of 7 villages due to the drinking water protection zone over the reservoir in the 1970s. These were the following Ruthenian villages: Dara, Ostrožnica, Ruské, Smolník, Starina, Veľká Poľana, and Zvala.
