The square is created by a comprehensive collection of historic buildings that almost completely limits the city fortifications. The central area of the historic core of the city is a rectangular square built up with a number of ancient burgher houses. The building of the former town hall from the 16th century stands in the center of the square. In the valuable interiors of the town hall the most precious exhibits of the National History Museum are exhibited. Another exhibition of this museum was located in originally Gothic burgher tenement Gantzughof with a renaissance arcade, which is in the southwest corner of the square. The city's decoration is also a Franciscan church with a monastery. The monastery is near the walls of the city fortifications.
