Svidník

Svidník was built on an important trade route, so-called amber road, towards Poland. There were many war tragedies, both during World War I and World War II. Carpathian-Dukla operation during World War II was one of the biggest on European war fronts. Nowadays, the city is inhabited by 12 450 citizens.

Svidník is the center of the region tightly connected with the culture and history of Ruthenians and Ukrainians in Slovakia. There are attractive Ruthenian Culture Celebrations of Slovakia in the summer, which present folk traditions and the culture of primitive ethnic groups in northeastern Slovakia. The Museum of Ukrainian Culture is also devoted to the Ruthenians.
