St. Kosma and Damian Church in Kotania

The former Orthodox Church in Kotań, dedicated to St. Cosmas and Damian, is situated near the road to Desznica on the yellow trail connecting Krempna with Mrukowa. The temple currently serves as a Roman Catholic church under the same dedication, a Krempna parish branch. It was probably built in the second half of the eighteenth century; then, it was rebuilt a few times. However, it fully retained the features of a typical Lemko church, classic for the western Lemko region. For this reason, a copy of the temple - as a model example of Lemko architecture - was erected in an open-air museum in Lviv. The church is evidently three-part; it consists of a lower presbytery, a central, higher nave, and a women's gallery (narthex ). There is a lofty tower with a chamber over the narthex. The nave and the presbytery are covered with tented roofs; the tower is crowned with a baroque spherical cupola with an apparent lantern. Much smaller spherical helmets and pseudo-lanterns were also placed on the tops of the nave and celestial roofs. The temple is boarded and shingled. At the church, there is a lapidarium consisting of 22 stone crosses, tombstones, and roadside figures from Nieznajowa, Rozstajne, Grab, Ciechania, and other church cemeteries in the area. A stylish wooden fence surrounds the whole foundation. Inside the temple, a fragment of the iconostasis - a dozen or so icons dating back to the second half of the 19th century. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Other icons and some other equipment can be found in the Orthodox Art Department of the Castle Museum in Łańcut. In Kotań, on the other hand, there is the altar setting with a copy of the 17th-century icon of Cosmas and Damian, altar candlesticks, feretory, and banners.
