Dukla

Dukla is a town in the Krosno district with a population of about 2,100 people. The first mention of Dukla, still as a village, comes from 1366, when it was a knightly property of the Bogoria family. Janusz Suchywilk, the archbishop of Gniezno, who came from it, established a town settlement in 1380.

However, its greatest heyday took place in the 18th century, when Jerzy August Wandalin Mniszech chose the town as his seat. Supported by his wife, Maria Amalia née Brühl, daughter of the omnipotent minister of August III, he made Dukla a cultural and political life center. The couple built the magnificent Rococo palace and completed the construction works of both magnificent Dukla churches, started by Jerzy's father, Józef Wandalin Mniszch, the Grand Marshal of the Crown and the castellan of Kraków.

Thanks to the Mniszech family, Dukla, although small today, has several significant monuments. These are primarily the Mniszech Palace, which is exciting today, and the Rococo Church of St. st. Mary Magdalene and the Bernardine sanctuary of St. John of Dukla.

In the market square itself, the neo-Gothic town hall from the second half of the Nineteenth century, hiding fragments of an older building, and a little further from the center, the picturesque ruins of the former customs chamber, operating here still in the sixteenth century, and the synagogue from the eighteenth century.
