The village was discplaced during the construction of the Starin dam. The water reservoir was built between 1981 and 1988 to supply the eastern region of Slovakia with drinking water. Its construction was preceded by the transfer of 7 villages because of the protective zone of drinking water by the reservoir in the 1970s of the 20th century. One of the seven villages was Veľká Poľana.
At the site of the evicted village one can find a chapel, a cemetery and the remnants of many abandoned houses.
